During the ceremony in Munich, the International Football Federation (FIFA) voted Barcelona forward Messi (pictured) the best footballer of the planet for 2010.
The forward from Argentina’s national team (pictured) and of Barcelona in 2010 won with the Catalan club the title of Spain’s champions, and also became the best striker of the 2009-2010 Champions Football League (58 goals).
Since 2010, the Ballon d’Or and FIFA’s Best Player Award have been merged into one award. In 2009, Messi (pictured) won both the FIFA prize and the Ballon d'Or.
“It’s a very special day for me,” said the 23-year-old forward (left). “I didn’t expect to win it today. Already it’s a source of happiness to be here with my friends and even more to win it.”
Messi (left) received 22.65% of the votes cast by coaches and captains of national teams plus invited journalists. Andres Iniesta finished second with 17.36 % and Xavi Hernandez received 16.48% to finish third. Right in the photo: Marta, who won the best women’s player award for 2010.
